What an amazing little niece you've got, she's a beauty inside and out. What you shared was so real and so true...hard to hear but true, thanks for putting this all out there.
Wow!! Just wow. I admire you so very much!
she is such a cutie! i think it's great that you found something positive in the situation. her mom is so sweet to say that she had too much love. maybe try putting a picture of your niece on your fridge as a constant reminder, to make good food choices. i used to put up motivational messages around the house to help me. inspiration can come from anywhere or anyone. good luck hun!
You know what Alan? I think the GREATEST lesson you can teach your niece is that you do love yourself right this very minute (and you demonstrate that by feeding yourself well, exercising your body and by respecting who you are, no matter what the number is on the scale)...modeling that is WAAAAAAY more powerful. Also? While I agree that she didn't choose to have a heart condition, I don't agree (100%) that you chose to have the body you have/had. You made some decisions about some stuff back before you were aware that you had a choice...now that you know better, you're doing better, but as a little boy some stuff happened and you reacted to protect yourself. Having compassion for yourself doesn't mean you can't or won't better yourself!
